We love watches that have a good story. And that’s the case with the Fortis Official Cosmonaut Chronograph we have here. In 1994, Fortis became the official cosmonaut’s watch. First only for the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center, and since 2001 also with the Russian space agency Roscosmos.
You can find some interesting videos on YouTube, like this one here, where you can see the Fortis chronograph on board the International Space Station. Fortis’ chronograph was also used during the spacewalk of the MIR-18 crew (Vladimir Dezhurov and Gennadi Strekalov) on May 12, 1995.
Preparing For Life On Mars
In cooperation with the Austrian Space Forum, since 2017 Fortis had been working on the development of the first Mars-Watch. The “Amadee-18” was the starting signal for the joint project. In the desert of Oman, a simulated Mars mission took place in 2018 where several experiments were carried out over several weeks which should make a life on Mars possible. Each line in the logo patch represents an experiment and the different reds and oranges for the sunrises and sunsets on Mars and Earth. We reviewed the Official Cosmonauts Chronograph Amadee-18 version here.
Besides a good space story, the Fortis Official Cosmonauts Chronograph in steel is also an impressive watch on the wrist. Although the official size is 44mm (as can be seen in the specification overview), it actually wears a bit small. The case size is 42mm, but the diameter of the bezel is 44mm. So even if your wrists aren’t that large, the Official Cosmonaut Chronograph will be a comfortable watch to wear.
