Apollo 17 30th Anniversary

Just before astronaut Eugene Cernan steps up the ladder of the lunar model to leave the Moon, at 5:34GMT on December 14th, 1972, he does something that made almost every daughter in the world jealous. He knees down and scribbles the initials of Tracy, his daughter, in the Moondust. Her initials are still there and probably will be there for the next millions of years. Eugene Andrew Cernan, or Gene Cernan, is known as The Last Man on the Moon. This watch, the Speedmaster Apollo XVII “Last Man on the Moon” commemorates the last moon mission and the man who stood on the moon for the last time in 1972.

The final Apollo mission

In 2002, when the limited edition Speedmaster watches weren’t as bold and extravert as they became not much later, Omega introduced a Speedmaster Professional ‘Moonwatch’ that commemorated the Apollo 17 mission. It was the last Apollo mission to the moon, with astronauts Cernan, Evans and Schmitt. The difference between this particular watch and the standard Moonwatch at the time (reference 3570.50) is the case back and the packaging. This watch is limited to 3000 pieces and has a special commemorative case back with the engraving “E.A. Cernan – Apollo  XVII, 12.14.1972, Last Man on the Moon”.

Apollo 17 mission patch

The packaging is an anthracite box of a material that reminds us of the spacesuits, with the Apollo 17 mission patch on top. Inside you will find a light grey felt lining, with a pillow for the watch. On the inside of the lid, is again the Apollo 17 mission patch in black.

Condition

When buying pre-owned, the condition is key. That’s what we fully understand here at Fratello, as we are collectors ourselves for many years (decades). This Speedmaster Professional reference 3574.51 has never been worn and the clasp is still wrapped with the blue protective foil. The leather cardholder contains the International Warranty Card and the pictograms card, as can be seen in the pictures. The watch is simply in amazing condition and is waiting for that new owner to cherish it. It also makes a great birth-year gift for someone special.
